RIO Olympics 2016 is getting more and more exciting each day. There are so many ways to show our love and support for the Summer Olympics! Why not make a DIY flower arrangement that represents the infamous Olympic Torch!
The ancient Greeks believed the Olympic Torch symbolizes fire with sacred qualities and was gifted to mankind by Prometheus. It is also a symbol of harmony and goodwill. To ignite flames, they used mirrors to focus the sun’s rays that would perpetually burn in front of Greek temples. It was 1936 when the modern use of the Olympic Flame began with a long relay of runners carrying torches from Olympia to the site of the games.
RIO Olympics 2016 | Heliconia’s Olympic Torch Flower Arrangement
Feel the vibes of RIO Olympics 2016 with a festive floral arrangement! To celebrate this year’s Summer Olympics, we are sharing this tutorial on how to make a flower centerpiece in 6 easy steps! This creative display concept will give your love for flower arrangements a pro factor. For this tutorial, we will be using a flower that best resembles the Olympic Torch — the Heliconia Stricta. Its flowers are bright orange and flame-like that spire above the leaves.
For this RIO Olympics 2016-inspired flower arrangement, you’ll need:
- Heliconia (8 stems)
- Strelizia Leaves (3 leaves)
- Flexi Grass
- Bamboo Rings (40 rings)
Step 1. Cut the bamboo rings
Using a wood cutter, cut ten bamboo rings in their circumference. We’re going to make a chain by looping them together to resemble the Olympic Rings.
Step 2. Loop the bamboo rings
Loop each bamboo ring to form a chain. Repeat this step to make four sets of chains in ten.
Step 3. Assemble
For the flower arrangement, take one Heliconia and Strezilia leaf. Then, take one set of chain loop and add another stem of Heliconia looping in the other end of the chain to form a curvature. Add a few pieces of flexi grass. (Remember to hold the bouquet real tight).
Step 4. Add more!
Continue adding more flowers, leaves, and bamboo chains together.
Step 5. Tie them all together
When you’re done putting them together, hold the bouquet tightly, and tie them using a wire.
Step 6. Level the stems
Carefully cut off the overlapping stems of the plants to make the bouquet’s stems even.
And you’re done! Your Olympics torch-inspired floral arrangement is now ready to be placed in a vase.
